Award-winning photographer Nick Gleitzman divides his time between a 19th Century railway cottage overlooking the Hawkesbury River, north of Sydney, and Discovery Bay in Hong Kong.
Twenty years of producing commercial photographs for some of Sydney’s best art directors and designers has resulted in an uncommon eye for detail, a distinctive sense of colour and style, and a passion for aesthetic and technical excellence. Gleitzman’s interest in photography originally began with his early attempts to capture the unique beauty and character of the Australian landscape. That fascination has continued for three decades, and has now grown in scope to encompass the visually rich urban landscape of Hong Kong.
When Gleitzman visited Hong Kong for the first time in July 2007, he was immediately struck by the many obvious contrasts that the city contains. Gaining a strong sense of the pace of modern Hong Kong life, he went about recording his first impressions of the transience, the impermanence, that exists at the fringes of the development of the modern city. He found and photographed fragmentary evidence of past stories, suggestions of layered information, and, using digital imaging technology, transformed them into powerful graphic images that provide a personal insight into the recent – and not-so-recent – history of the city and its people.
Palimpsest, an exhibition of approximately sixty 24x36 inch prints, was first shown at The Rotunda, Exchange Square, from July 15–20, 2008.

Palimpsest was then exhibited at the offices of The American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong from August 2008 – March 2009, where it was available for private viewings while being enjoyed by AmCham staff, members and guests.

“Nick Gleitzman is a photographer with passion. He has an eye for the random detail of the urban landscape mixed with the depth of a professional’s technical grasp of the medium. His ability to find art amongst the veritable debris of the human environment is a rare talent. Nick brings a vision to our view of city life that is both calculated and at the same time random; aesthetic and yet raw.”
