Palimpsest

palimpsest noun
something usually having diverse layers or aspects apparent beneath the surface *

Photographer and writer Nick Gleitzman visited Hong Kong and China for the first time in 2007. “I was immediately struck by the many obvious contrasts that the city contains. At the same time as developing a strong sense of the pace of modern Hong Kong life, I went about recording my first impressions of this fascinating new landscape. What struck me most was the transience and impermanence that exist at the fringes of the development of the modern city. As I explored, I found and photographed fragmentary evidence of past stories, suggestions of layered information that formed my personal insight into the recent, and not so recent history of the city and its people,” says Gleitzman.

Gleitzman took these photographic images at various locations in Mid-levels, Stanley and Shenzhen. He then printed them using state-of-the-art digital printing technology and the latest generation of archival inkjet inks on high quality watercolour paper.

London-born Gleitzman’s interest in photography began with his early attempts to capture the unique beauty and character of the landscape in his adopted country of Australia. That intest grew into an enduring love affair which continues today. He works from a nineteenth century cottage overlooking the picturesque Hawkesbury River on the outskirts of Sydney in New South Wales.

“My passion for photography began with, and has continued to be embodied within, my love for the natural world,” explains Gleitzman. “For years, while running my commercial photography studio in Sydney, I would throw a sleeping bag and some food, along with my cameras, into my 4WD on a Friday afternoon, and take off, ‘going bush’ for the weekend to explore and photograph the landscape of the range of mountains that lies just inland from the coast of my home state, NSW.”

These images are selected from the Palimpsest exhibition, which will be held 15-20 July, at the Rotunda, Exchange Square.
